What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty, or a "boob job") places a silicone implant behind each breast to add volume, improve the shape of the upper breast or correct a difference in size between the two sides.
Breast augmentation does not lift the breast. If your breasts have dropped, for example after pregnancy or weight loss, your surgeon may recommend a breast lift, alone or combined with implants. See the difference below.
Who is breast augmentation suitable for?
Breast augmentation may be suitable if you:

Chosen together with your surgeon to suit your chest width, tissue and the look you want, from subtle to fuller.
Round or anatomical shape
Round implants give more fullness at the top; anatomical (teardrop) implants follow a more sloped natural profile.
Placement
Implants can sit under the chest muscle, partly under it (dual plane) or above it, depending on how much natural tissue covers them.
Incision
Most often in the fold under the breast; sometimes around the areola or in the armpit.
Augmentation vs. breast lift
Augmentation adds volume; a breast lift removes excess skin and raises the nipple position. Some patients need both.

Tightness, swelling and soreness across the chest are normal. Rest, keep your arms close and wear the support bra day and night.
- Around day 6–7
Check-up with your surgeon before you fly home.
- 1–2 weeks
Many people return to desk work. Avoid lifting and reaching overhead.
- 4–6 weeks
Most exercise can usually restart gradually, once your surgeon agrees.
- 3–6 months
Implants settle into their final position and the shape softens.

What are the risks of breast implants?
As with any operation there are risks such as bleeding, infection and scarring. Specific to implants are capsular contracture (scar tissue tightening around the implant), implant rupture, rippling and changes in nipple sensation. Your surgeon explains these, and how they are managed, at your consultation.
Do breast implants last forever?
No. Implants are not lifetime devices, and many people need a replacement or revision at some point. Regular check-ups help monitor them.
Which implant size should I choose?
Size is chosen together with your surgeon based on your chest measurements, tissue and the look you want. Bringing photos of results you like helps the discussion.
What is the difference between breast augmentation and a breast lift?
Augmentation adds volume with an implant. A breast lift removes excess skin and lifts the nipple and breast tissue. If your breasts have dropped, you may need a lift alone or combined with implants.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
Many women can breastfeed after augmentation, especially when the incision is in the breast fold, but this cannot be guaranteed. Discuss your plans with your surgeon.
