How does transplantation work for international patients?
For international patients, transplants are performed from a living donor who brings part of the liver or one kidney. Under Turkish law, the donor is usually a close relative or spouse, and every case is reviewed by the hospital's ethics committee. Organ trading is illegal.
Both the recipient and the donor undergo detailed tests to confirm the transplant is medically suitable and safe for the donor.
Who can be considered?
A transplant may be considered if:
- You have end-stage kidney disease or advanced liver disease
- Your doctors have recommended a transplant
- A suitable family member is willing to be assessed as a living donor
- You and your donor can provide the required identity and relationship documents
- You are otherwise fit enough for major surgery
The transplant team decides on suitability after reviewing both the recipient's and the donor's medical records and tests.
